As New Covid Wave Surges in Asia, Death Rates Increase Dramatically
Several countries in the Asian-Pacific area are experiencing surges of Covid-19 infections, leading to overwhelmed hospitals and record death rates.
Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar have been particularly hard hit and are having trouble keeping up with new patients as well as new cremations and burials. All three countries have now surpassed India's per capita death rate during this latest wave of Covid-19 infections.
Experts believe that the record number of new cases in the region is, in part, due to the more contagious Delta variant of the disease, low local vaccination numbers and people growing weary of Covid-19 safety measures.
Several countries in the region have imposed lockdowns or introduced new safety measures to try and slow the sudden surge in new cases.
