Azerbaijan Says Armenian Missile Killed 13, Wounded 50
On Saturday, Azerbaijan accused Armenia of attacking its second largest city with a ballistic missile that resulted in 13 deaths and wounded 50.
The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied launching the strike.
Azerbaijani officials said the missile destroyed or damaged 20 buildings in the Ganja area.
Azerbaijan President, Ilham Aliyev, called the strike a war crime and warned Armenia that there would be a response.
Said Aliyev, "Azerbaijan will give its response and it will do so exclusively on the battlefield."
The new missile attack is an escalation in the ongoing hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. This is the heaviest engagement between the two forces in 25 years.
The escalation of fighting in the region raises concerns that this could lead to a larger conflict that involves both Russia and Turkey.
Russia attempted to broker a cease-fire between the two countries that was meant to go into effect last Saturday, however, new attacks continue to occur as both sides blame the other for not complying with the cease-fire.
Both sides have denied targeting civilians and residential areas.
