Biden Increases US National Refugee Cap Significantly
On Monday, President Biden formally increased the US National Refugee Cap to 62,500 for this year.
The increase is over four times higher than the previous cap of 15,000 established by the Trump administration.
Biden has been facing bi-partisan blowback for the last several weeks for his delay in replacing former President Trump’s historically low cap.
Said Biden, upon signing the emergency determination, “It is important to take this action today to remove any lingering doubt in the minds of refugees around the world who have suffered so much, and who are anxiously waiting for their new lives to begin.”
Biden is expected to boost the cap to 125,000 in 2022.
