Biden Signs Orders to Provide Aid to Low-Income Americans
On Friday, President Biden signed two executive orders that provide additional aid to very low-income Americans. One of the orders expands food assistance and delivers additional stimulus checks, the other order raises the minimum wage to $15 for the federal workforce.
The orders are consistent with the larger $1.9 trillion relief plan that Biden proposed last week. However, the larger plan would need to be approved by Congress.
Biden, reflecting on the 1 in 5 black or latino families in the US that say they don't have enough to eat, said, "This cannot be who we are as a country. These are not the values of our nation. We cannot, will not let people go hungry. We cannot let people get evicted because of nothing they did themselves. We cannot watch people lose their jobs. We have to act."
