Biden to Pick Retired Gen. Lloyd Austin for Secretary of Defense
According to several sources, President-Elect Joe Biden plans to nominate retired 4-Star Army General Lloyd Austin as his Secretary of Defense.
Austin was the former commander of US Central Command. If confirmed, he would be the first Black man to lead the Department of Defense.
Because he retired from active service only four years ago, Austin would require a congressional waiver to serve in the position. Federal law normally requires at least seven years of retirement before taking on the role.
