Biden to Propose 8-Year Citizenship Path for Immigrants
According to administration sources, President-Elect Joe Biden plans to reveal a new immigration bill that would provide a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people living in the US without legal status.
Those living without legal status as of Jan. 1, 2021 would have a five-year path to receiving a green card as long as they pass the background checks, pay taxes and meet other basic requirements. From there, they would have a 3-year path to citizenship, should they wish to become naturalized citizens.
"Dreamers", young people who arrived in the US illegally as children and people under temporary protective status, could qualify immediately for green cards if they are working or in school. Some other exceptions will also be available.
The bill aligns with some of the campaign promises Biden made to Latino voters and other immigrant communities. However, considering there is no trade-off for enhanced border security in the bill, experts feel it is unlikely to gain much traction with Republicans and may have difficulty passing in Congress.
