California Election Officials Order GOP to Remove Illegal Ballot Drop Boxes
The California Republican Party placed several illegal ballot drop boxes in three counties over the weekend. In some cases, they were labeled "Official Ballot Drop Off Box", which does not comply with state law.
On Monday, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and the state justice department, issued a cease-and-desist order to the California GOP to remove the illegal ballot drop boxes that have appeared in Los Angeles County, Orange County and Fresno County. They were given until Thursday to comply with the order.
The California Republican Party has responded saying they have removed the word "official" from the boxes but that they will not remove the boxes themselves, saying this is simply "ballot harvesting."
Ballot harvesting is a legal practice in which volunteers, campaign workers and organizations collect completed ballots and drop them off at county election offices.
Said California GOP spokesman Hector Barajas, "the ballot harvesting will continue...," state laws don't specifically indicate whether private organization's drop boxes are permitted or not.
Many are concerned as to whether the votes placed in these illegal ballot boxes will be properly counted towards the election.
