California Gov. Newsom Wins Recall to Stay in Office
What Happened:
On Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) handily defeated a GOP-led recall election aimed at removing him from office. Newsom benefited from a strong turnout of Democrats in the state.
Newsom has been highly criticized for his handling of the Coronavirus pandemic in the state and, as recently as a month ago, looked vulnerable in the recall election.
The emergence of Larry Elder, a conservative talk radio show host who opposes mask and vaccine mandates, as his main opponent solidified his position.
