California Wildfire Near Lake Tahoe Forces More Evacuations
The Caldor Wildfire has now forced thousands of people to evacuate the popular resort town of South Lake Tahoe and is threatening over 30,000 additional structures. The wildfire has already destroyed hundreds of homes.
Over 53,000 people have been placed under evacuation orders as the fire edges closer to Lake Tahoe.
The fire has burned over 199,000 acres and is expanding rapidly. Firefighters say only about 18% of the fire is contained. The fire is now California's 17th largest wildfire on record.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the counties surrounding Lake Tahoe. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak also declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the wildfire crossing state lines over the next few days.
