CDC Extends Eviction Moratorium By 1 Month

What Happened:

  • On Thursday, the CDC and the Biden administration announced that they are extending the eviction moratorium by 30 days until July 31st, but that this is expected to be the last time they will do so.

  • Said CDC Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, "this is intended to be the final extension of the moratorium."

  • White House Secretary Jen Psaki stated that the ban on evictions for renters and mortgage holders was "always intended to be temporary."

  • Several dozen Congress members have written to President Biden and Walensky asking for an extension of the moratorium saying that ending the assistance too abruptly would disproportionately hurt low-income communities.

  • Landlords have long argued against the eviction moratorium and challenged it in court saying that the focus should be on distribution of rental assistance funds.
