CDC Extends Eviction Moratorium Until June 30

What Happened:

  • On Monday, the CDC extended the federal ban on evictions until June 30.

  • The extension will provide relief to millions of Americans struggling to pay their rent because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • This is the third time the deadline has been extended. Said CDC Director, Rochelle Walenksy, "The Covid-19 pandemic has presented a historic threat to the nation's public health. Keeping people in their homes and out of crowded or congregate settings...is a key step in helping to stop the spread of Covid-19."

  • According to a survey conducted in March, roughly 12 million renters are currently behind on their rent.

  • Landlord groups are challenging the eviction moratorium in courts saying it places an unfair burden on property owners.
