CDC Votes That Health Care Workers and Long Term Care Residents Receive COVID Vaccine First

What Happened:

  • On Tuesday, the vaccine advisers to the Center for Disease Control voted 13-1 that health care workers and residents of long term care facilities should be the first to receive any COVID-19 vaccines approved by the FDA for emergency use.

  • This initial rollout will be called Phase 1a of the CDC's coronavirus vaccine distribution plan.

  • According to the CDC, long term care facility residents account for 6% of coronavirus cases and 40% of coronavirus deaths in the US. More than 240,000 health care workers have also been infected with coronavirus with 858 deaths.

  • The only vote against came from Dr. Helen Talbot who said she is concerned that the vaccine has not been tested with residents of long term care facilities thus far.
