Ceasefire Reached in Gaza Bringing End to Violence
Updated: May 22, 2021

What Happened:
On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that a ceasefire had been reached between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
The agreement will halt an 11-day Israeli military operation against Hamas militants in the region and mark the end of the worst violence the region has seen since the 2014 war.
The Gaza Strip has been under heavy artillery fire for over a week as Hamas militants and Israeli forces exchanged multiple rocket attacks and airstrikes. The death toll has continued to climb for both countries as well.
The decision comes after heavy international pressure from Israeli allies, such as the US. Many countries were concerned that the continued escalation of violence would lead to war.
The Egyptian mediated proposal will go into effect at 2 AM local time but both sides emphasized that the follow through would determine the continuation of the ceasefire.
