Chad's President Idriss Deby Dies From Wounds Obtained On Battlefield
On Tuesday, Chad President Idriss Deby Itno died from injuries obtained on the battlefield fighting rebels, according to a military spokesman.
Deby ruled the Central African country for over thirty years and had just won the April 11 presidential election a few hours earlier.
Rebels have been seeking to oust Deby as leader since 2016.
Itno's son, Mahamat Kaka, will lead a transitional council for the next 18 months. Kaka has promised "free, democratic and transparent elections following the spirit of sacrifice for which the marshal fought during his life."
