Congress Approves Bill to Make Juneteenth a Federal Holiday

What Happened:

On Wednesday, the House voted 415-14 in favor of making June 19th or “Juneteenth” a Federal Holiday. President Biden is expected to sign the bill into law Thursday afternoon.
Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865 when Union soldiers informed enslaved people in Texas that they were now free, about two months after the confederacy surrendered and 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth is the first new Federal Holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created in 1983.
