Day 1 of the Republican National Convention - Recap

What Happened:

  • Donald Trump, Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, Senator Tim Scott and Donald Trump Jr. all spoke on the first night of the convention.

  • The themes of the night focused on the economy, how Trump handled the pandemic, race and Biden.

What was Said:

  • Trump himself kicked off the convention with warnings about mail-in voting and how that could lead to a "stolen election." Trump will be speaking all four nights of the convention.

  • The headlining spot was held by Sen. Tim Scott, the sole Black Republican, who spoke on race, the economy and criticized Biden.

  • Said Scott, a successful Biden-Harris ticket will "turn our country into a socialist utopia." He added, "The truth is, our nation’s arc always bends back toward fairness. We are not fully where we want to be, but thank God we are not where we used to be." He also targeted Biden's past record with race, particularly criticizing his support of the 1994 crime bill.

  • Nikki Haley discussed Trump's foreign policy agenda, Biden and race during her speech saying "This president has a record of strength and success...the former vice president has a record of weakness and failure." She tied Biden to more progressive Democratic groups saying "Their vision for America is socialism and we know that socialism has failed everywhere."

  • On race, she said "In much of the Democratic Party, it’s now fashionable to say that America is racist. That is a lie. America is not a racist country...America is a story that’s a work in progress."
