EU Launches Legal Action Against UK Over Internal Market Bill

What Happened:

  • The EU announced Thursday that it will be launching legal action against the UK in response to the "Internal Market Bill", which the EU says is a breach of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

  • The "Internal Market Bill", was proposed by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and breaks international law. Specifically, the UK is seeking to undo sections of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

  • Said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the British plan "by its very nature is a breach of the obligation of good faith laid down in the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement."

  • EU leaders believe that if the bill becomes law, it could lead to the reimposition of a hard land border between Northern Ireland and Ireland and could thereby affect the stability of the region.

  • The UK officially left the EU on January 31st and is trying to negotiate future trade relations.
