EU Leaders Place Sanctions on Belarus for “Hijacking” Plane
Updated: May 26, 2021

What Happened:
On Monday, leaders of the European Union agreed to place sanctions on Belarus in response to the country’s recent forced diversion of a passenger plane, which was carried out to arrest an opposition journalist.
The sanctions will prohibit Belarusian airlines from using the airspace and airports of the EU.
The EU leaders also called for the release of the arrested journalist, Raman Pratasevich, a vocal critic of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
Said EU Council Chief Charles Michel, “We won’t tolerate that one can try to play…with the lives of innocent civilians.”
