Updated: May 26

What Happened:

  • On Monday, leaders of the European Union agreed to place sanctions on Belarus in response to the country’s recent forced diversion of a passenger plane, which was carried out to arrest an opposition journalist.

  • The sanctions will prohibit Belarusian airlines from using the airspace and airports of the EU.

  • The EU leaders also called for the release of the arrested journalist, Raman Pratasevich, a vocal critic of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

  • Said EU Council Chief Charles Michel, “We won’t tolerate that one can try to play…with the lives of innocent civilians.”
