Facebook Says It Will Target Misinformation Before Election
Facebook announced Thursday that they are taking steps to encourage voting and discourage misinformation from their website. They will restrict new political ads the week before the election and remove posts that contain misinformation about Covid-19 and voting policies.
Facebook will also provide links to official election results thereby trying to dissuade campaigns from declaring "victory" prematurely.
“This election is not going to be business as usual. We all have a responsibility to protect our democracy." - Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg
Said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post, “This election is not going to be business as usual. We all have a responsibility to protect our democracy. That means helping people register and vote, clearing up confusion about how this election will work, and taking steps to reduce the chances of violence and unrest.”
Many voters receive their "news" through Facebook and Facebook has historically been criticized for not fact-checking political ads.
