FDA Approves Antiviral Remdesivir for Covid-19 Treatment
What Happened:
On Thursday, US regulators approved the antiviral Remdesivir to help treat Covid-19 patients. Remdesivir, which is given to hospitalized patients via an IV, is the first drug to gain full FDA approval for Covid-19 treatment.
According to a large study conducted by the National Institute of Health, the drug, developed by Gilead Sciences, helps reduce the recovery time for many patients by up to 5 days; thereby reducing the 15 day average recovery time to about 10 days.
Remdesivir has been authorized for use on an emergency basis since the spring.
The drug works by making it more difficult for the virus to make copies of itself.
It is important to note, that while Remdesivir can help reduce the recovery time, the drug itself does not improve the survival odds of hospitalized patients, nor is it a vaccine.
