Florida Sets New Record of Over 21,000 Covid Cases in a Day as Outbreak Resurges

What’s Happening:

  • On Saturday, Florida reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19 marking the state’s highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic.

  • Florida has become the epicenter for a new outbreak accounting for nearly 1/5 of the nation’s new cases. The more contagious Delta variant has been particularly impactful spreading throughout the state very quickly.

  • Many theme parks and resorts have gone back to asking visitors to wear masks indoors. So far, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has not issued a mask mandate and has actually barred school districts from requiring students to wear masks when school resumes in a few weeks.

  • Currently, about 60% of Floridians have been vaccinated, ranking it about midway amongst the states.

  • Florida hospitals warned that the number of Covid hospitalizations is already reaching last year’s peak and some have stopped performing non-emergency surgeries to accommodate the influx of new patients.
