Florida Sets New Record of Over 21,000 Covid Cases in a Day as Outbreak Resurges

What’s Happening:
On Saturday, Florida reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19 marking the state’s highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic.
Florida has become the epicenter for a new outbreak accounting for nearly 1/5 of the nation’s new cases. The more contagious Delta variant has been particularly impactful spreading throughout the state very quickly.
Many theme parks and resorts have gone back to asking visitors to wear masks indoors. So far, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has not issued a mask mandate and has actually barred school districts from requiring students to wear masks when school resumes in a few weeks.
Currently, about 60% of Floridians have been vaccinated, ranking it about midway amongst the states.
Florida hospitals warned that the number of Covid hospitalizations is already reaching last year’s peak and some have stopped performing non-emergency surgeries to accommodate the influx of new patients.
