Former French President Sarkozy Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison
On Monday, a French court sentenced former French president Nicolas Sarkozy to three years in prison for corruption and influence peddling.
Sarkozy was president of France from 2007 to 2012 and was found guilty of illegally trying to obtain information about an investigation into his campaign finances.
The judge decided that Sarkozy did not need to serve his time in prison and will instead be under house arrest with an electronic bracelet. Sarkozy is the first one-time president to have been sentenced to jail in France's history.
Through wiretaps, prosecutors proved that Sarkozy had offered prestigious positions in exchange for information about the ongoing investigation into his campaign finances.
Sarkozy still faces other charges and will stand trial again in a few weeks for allegedly violating campaign financing rules in his unsuccessful 2012 presidential bid.
