House Votes to Add Washington D.C. as 51st State
Updated: Apr 23, 2021

What Happened:
On Thursday, the House passed legislation to make Washington D.C. the 51st state, thereby granting over 700,000 DC residents representation in Congress.
The legislation passed purely along party lines 216-208, with Democrats voting in favor and Republicans opposing the bill as the area is considered to be largely liberal.
The legislation will now go to the Senate for a vote. With the Senate evenly split 50-50, the bill will encounter much more difficulty to pass.
