Israel and Two Arab States Sign Pacts to Normalize Relations

What Happened:

  • On Tuesday, Israel signed pacts with two Arab States during a White House ceremony with President Donald Trump. Trump is credited with helping broker the agreement.

  • The agreements normalize relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

  • The agreement does not discuss the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The Palestinian state considers the pacts a betrayal by their fellow Arabs.

  • Hundreds gathered for the ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House.

What Was Said:

  • “We’re here this afternoon to change the course of history. After decades of division and conflict, we mark the dawn of a new Middle East," said President Trump.

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this day “is a pivot of history. It heralds a new dawn of peace.”
