Looting in downtown Chicago after police-involved gunfire

What Happened:

  • Sunday afternoon, police responded to a report of a man with a gun in the Englewood area.

  • According to police spokesman, Tom Ahem, police took fire from the individual while pursuing him on foot. Officers returned fire and the man was struck and taken to a local hospital.

  • Police say large groups started to gather on Michigan Avenue shortly after midnight. These groups vandalized and looted retail businesses on Michigan Avenue overnight.

  • It is still unclear if the unrest was related to the officer-involved shooting in Chicago on Sunday earlier in the day, but that is the presumption.

  • Bus and Train Service in downtown Chicago was suspended at police request.
