Major East Coast Pipeline Currently Shut Down Because of Ransomware Attack
On Saturday, Colonial Pipeline, the operator of a major pipeline on the east coast, announced that they have temporarily ceased all pipeline operations to deal with a ransomware attack.
The company provides roughly 45% of fuel consumed on the east coast and this latest attack demonstrates the risks of cyberattacks on critical US infrastructure.
Although the pipeline is currently shut down, experts say the attack is unlikely to affect gasoline prices unless it leads to a prolonged shutdown.
The federal government and the Biden administration are working with the company to restore operations.
