McConnell Introduces New Bill That Tacks On Other Trump Requests With $2000 Stimulus Checks
On Wednesday, one day after blocking the quick vote on the standalone bill to increase the stimulus checks to $2000, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) introduced a new bill which includes the stimulus check increase but also tacks on several other Trump requests.
The new bill incorporates the stimulus check increase but also adds on a repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and establishes a commission to further investigate election security.
By adding on these other requests, the bill is unlikely to garner enough support to pass. Several lawmakers say this is a purposeful move by McConnell to block the stimulus check increase indirectly by making the bill unappealing.
Said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D), "What we’re seeing right now is Leader McConnell trying to kill the checks — the $2,000 checks desperately needed by so many American families."
The House voted overwhelmingly in favor of the standalone bill on Monday but McConnell blocked the quick vote on the standalone bill on Tuesday citing the need to address Trump's other requests as well.
The move is not entirely surprising as Senate Republicans have historically opposed additional spending for Covid-19 relief and there was little chance the standalone bill would have passed in the GOP controlled Senate.
