Military Coup in Myanmar - Leader Suu Kyi Held Prisoner


What Happened:

  • Early Monday, a military coup took place in Myanmar. State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest.

  • Communication lines have been cut to the capital and Kyi’s National League for Democracy Party has been unreachable.

  • In a statement, the United States has said they oppose “any attempt to alter the outcome of recent elections or impede Myanmar’s democratic transition.”

  • Australia has also called for the release of Suu Kyi.

  • Kyi’s party won the majority of seats in parliament in the election, however, the military claims there was widespread election fraud.

  • Kyi became the country’s leader after several decades of military rule.
