New England Prepares for First Hurricane in 30 Years

What's Happening:

  • Hurricane Henri is expected to make landfall in Long Island, NY late Sunday and to continue onwards through Southern New England.

  • If the hurricane maintains its current trajectory, it will be the first hurricane to hit New England in 30 years.

  • Residents are being warned of intense rain and winds as well as potentially dangerous tidal surges along the coast. Fire Island residents are being urged to evacuate by Saturday evening.

  • Henri currently has a top wind speed of 75 mph and is moving up the coast at about 17 mph. It is still roughly 400 miles south of Long Island.

  • Officials are recommending that residents stock up on water and batteries and utility companies are warning of potential power outages that could last up to a week.
