New Zealand PM Ardern Wins Second Term in Office
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern won her second term in office in an election landslide on Saturday.
Ardern's liberal Labour Party secured 49% of the vote, compared to 27% for the second place conservative National Party.
Said Ardern, "This has not been an ordinary election, and it’s not an ordinary time. It’s been full of uncertainty and anxiety, and we set out to be an antidote to that."
She continued, "We are living in an increasingly polarized world, a place where, more and more, people have lost the ability to see one another’s point of view. I think in this election, New Zealanders have shown that this is not who we are."
Ardern popularity grew tremendously because of how well she handled the coronavirus pandemic. Currently, there are no active infections in the New Zealand (a nation of 5 million) and people are no longer required to wear masks or social distance.
