Powerful Derecho with over 90 mph winds moving through midwest


What Happened:

  • According to the National Weather Service, an "intense derecho" has traveled from southeast South Dakota all the way to Ohio, a path of 770 miles in only 14 hours.

  • The inland storm has generated numerous gusts over 74 mph -- hurricane force -- and several over 90 mph in central Iowa. Some of the peak gusts have reached over 110 mph.

  • There is widespread damage in Iowa and Illinois.

  • The storm has left nearly 1 million people without power.

  • The storm is classified as a derecho because it has exceeded the criteria of winds in excess of 58 mph and damage spanning at least 250 miles.
