Russian Opposition Leader Navalny Detained Upon Return to Russia
Updated: Jan 18
On Sunday, Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was detained by police upon his return to Russia. He was traveling with his wife.
Navalny was returning from Germany to Russia for the first time after having been poisoned with the military grade nerve agent Novichok, 5 months ago.
Before he was detained, Navalny told journalists that “This is the best day in the past five months. Everyone is asking me if I’m scared. I am not afraid. I feel completely fine walking towards the border control.”
Navalny is an extremely vocal critic of the Kremlin and Putin. The Russian Security Service FSB was implicated in his poisoning, however Russia has denied any involvement.
