Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Case on Abortion Rights
On Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case next term that proposes to rollback major abortion rights and limit Roe V. Wade.
The case will concern a controversial Mississippi law that banned most abortions after 15 weeks. The law, signed by former Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant (R), made exceptions for medical emergencies or "severe fatal abnormalities", but not for rape or incest. A federal judge struck down the law as did the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals.
With the Supreme Court now having a 6-3 conservative majority, many supporters of abortion rights are concerned that the case could be the first step towards attempts to overturn the landmark Roe V. Wade case, which legalized abortion nationwide prior to viability (around 24 weeks of pregnancy).
