Taliban Overtakes Another Provincial Capital in Afghanistan

Updated: Aug 14, 2021

What's Happening:

  • Uruzgan is the latest provincial capital to fall to the invading Taliban force in Afghanistan. They now control over 2/3 of the country and have seized control of over a dozen provincial capitals.

  • The Taliban has been on an aggressive offensive since President Biden decided to pull US troops out of the country a few months back. The insurgent group has swiftly captured territory to regain the control they had before US troops invaded back in 2001.

  • The US-trained Afghan defense forces have been trying to combat the group but have had little success thus far.

  • The Taliban’s expansion into a dozen provincial capitals seems to be purposely encircling the capital of Kabul.

  • The US has said they have no plans of re-entering the country with President Biden telling reporters that US troops have done all they could over the past 20 years to assist the Afghans.

  • The US continues to support Afghan troops with limited airstrikes, however, that is set to end on Aug. 31st when the US formally ends its role in the war.
