The VA Now Requires Covid-19 Vaccinations for Health Care Workers
What Happened:
On Monday, the Department of Veterans Affairs became the first major federal agency to require that their health care workers get Covid-19 vaccines. The mandatory vaccinations will cover specific medical personnel including physicians, dentists, podiatrists, optometrists, registered nurses, physician assistants and others who work in departmental facilities or provide direct care to veterans.
The move comes as the more virulent Delta variant spreads throughout the nation leading to yet another uptick in new Covid cases and hospitalizations.
The move also comes on the same day that 60 medical and health care organizations called for health care facilities to require that their workers get vaccinated.
Although vaccination among physicians is very high (estimated at 96% according to an AMA survey), it is much lower for people working at health care facilities, for example, only about 60% of staffers working at nursing care facilities have been vaccinated.
