Thousands Flee as Taliban Takes Control of Afghanistan

What's Happening:

  • On Monday, thousands of people continued to flood the Kabul airport in an attempt to escape the rule of the Taliban.

  • The Taliban entered the capital city of Kabul on Sunday and officially took control of the Afghanistan government later that evening, as former President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

  • In a swift offensive, the Taliban managed to gain control of nearly all of Afghanistan in just over a week.

  • Many civilians are fearful that the Taliban will reimpose the brutal rule they once maintained.

  • The Taliban has mounted an aggressive offensive since President Biden decided to pull US troops out of the country. The insurgent group has swiftly captured territory to regain the control they had before US troops invaded back in 2001.

  • Although the US has said they have no plans of re-entering the country, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, has approved an additional 1,000 troops into Afghanistan to help with the deteriorating security situation. With last week's approvals, that means 6,000 US troops will be in the country shortly.
