US Asking States to Speed Vaccinations - Not Hold Back 2nd Dose
According to officials, the Trump administration is now asking states to speed Covid-19 vaccinations to people that are 65 or older or at high risk by no longer holding back the 2nd dose of the two-shot vaccine.
President-Elect Joe Biden had said he would release the 2nd doses once his administration took over, so this new policy aligns with that plan.
HHS (Health and Human Services) Secretary Alex Azar said "the administration in the states has been too narrowly focused" and that they can release the second dose of the two-shot vaccine without jeopardizing the immunization of those who received the first dose. The Trump administration had previously been holding back the 2nd shot to ensure that those who received the first shot would be able to complete the immunization with the second dose.
Vaccines started rolling out in December but the slow pace has been criticized by Americans. US Surgeon General Jerome Adams said hundreds of thousands of people are getting vaccinated every day but that the pace needs to improve.
Said Adams in an interviews with Fox & Friends, "We're in a race against this virus and quite frankly, we're behind...we need to...pick up that pace."
