US Hits 70% Vaccination Target
What Happened:
On Monday, the United States achieved President Biden's goal of 70% of adults having taken at least one Covid-19 vaccination shot. The original goal was to hit this target by July 4th.
The benchmark, which was established in the hopes of achieving herd immunity, comes amidst another surge of Covid-19 cases as the Delta variant is inundating hospitals with new patients and causing politicians to rethink mask mandates.
On Saturday, Florida reached an all time record for new cases in a single day and Louisiana recently reinstated mandatory mask usage when indoors (whether people are vaccinated or not).
New cases in the United States have increased by 600% over the last month generating nearly 80,000 new cases per day. States with low vaccination rates tend to be the hardest hit.
